Can enzymes be used as evidence?

In a head-on accident, both drivers claimed that the other driver fell asleep at the wheel and caused a fatal accident which was later ruled a homicide. The attending physician at the local hospital did a thorough examination of the two drivers, took blood and urine samples and measured the drivers' temperatures using a disposable plastic mouthpiece and a tongue depressor, which he saved.

Fortunately, the physician had read that the level of saliva amylase increases in humans who are sleep deprived. In this exercise, students will:

  • Analyze the level of saliva amylase found on the tongue depressors of the two drivers
  • Use the results to determine who fell asleep at the wheel, causing the accident

This experiment does not contain components that have been prepared from human sources.
