It is also used as a raw material in the production of benzene, benzaldehyde, benzoic acid, toluene diisocyanate, benzyl-tert-butyl peroxide, xylene and many other chemical products. It plays an important role in biochemistry experiments to break open red blood cells in order to extract haemoglobin as well as used in the removal of cocaine from coca leaves to make coca-cola syrup.
