NEOGEN Fastidious Anaerobe Agar, 500 g

Fastidious Anaerobe Agar is used for the cultivation of anaerobic microorganisms and is not intended for use in the diagnosis of disease or other conditions in humans. A primary isolation medium capable of growing most clinically significant anaerobes. Developed by Lab M (Neogen Corporation), comparisons have shown this medium to be superior to other formulations as a primary isolation medium for fastidious organisms. The peptones included have been chosen for maximum growth stimulation. Starch and sodium bicarbonate act as de-toxification agents while hemin encourages pigment production in Porphyromonas melaninogenicus. Specific growth promoting agents are Cysteine for Fusobacterium necrophorum, Propionibacterium acne and Bacteriodes fragilis, arginine for Eubacterium spp. soluble pyrophosphate for Porph. gingivalis and Porph. asaccharolyticus.

Modified Tryptone-Soy Broth has emerged as the medium of choice for the enrichment of E. coli O157:H7 in red meats and is incorporated into ISO/TS 13136:2012. Brain Heart Infusion Agar is used for the cultivation of a wide variety of fastidious organisms and is not intended for use in the diagnosis of disease or other conditions in humans.A general purpose nutritious agar base. This medium was first used for the isolation of dental pathogens. With the addition of 7% defibrinated blood the medium will support the growth of a wide range of fastidious organisms, the phosphate buffer will help neutralize the acids produced from the utilization of glucose and thus maintain viability. The medium is not recommended for the determination of hemolytic reactions because of the glucose content.

NEOGEN Simmons Citrate Agar, 500 g

Simmons Citrate Agar is used for the differentiation of microorganisms on the basis of citrate utilization in a laboratory setting. Simmons Citrate Agar is not intended for use in the diagnosis of disease or other conditions in humans. Koser first developed a liquid medium for differentiating coliforms from fecal coliforms. Fecal coliforms were unable to use citrate as the sole source of carbon and inorganic ammonium salt as a sole source of nitrogen. Non-fecal coliforms, such as Enterobacter aerogenes could use citrate in such a medium with resultant alkalinity. Liquid medium had the disadvantage of appearing turbid when a large inoculum was used, although no growth had taken place. This observation led Simmons to devise a solid medium that eliminated the problem with turbidity. Simmons Citrate Agar is a modification of Koser’s medium, with the addition of bromothymol blue and 1.5% agar.

Todd Hewitt Broth was originally developed for the production of antigenic streptococcal hemolysin. Todd Hewitt Broth is prepared according to the formula described by Updyke and Nickle, who compared media for type specific extract production of group A streptococci. This study was performed using Todd Hewitt Broth prepared with infusion of fresh beef heart as a control. Results showed Todd Hewitt Broth was particularly satisfactory for growth of group A streptococci for serological typing. The medium gives colonial appearances, hemolysis patterns and pigment production of indicative value. Implicated vehicles of transmission include turkey frankfurters, coleslaw, pasteurized milk, Mexican style cheese, and pate.
